Egyptian limestone paving offers wonderfully easy upkeep. A thorough clean just two or three times a year, usually when the seasons change, is all that’s required.

To keep your patio looking immaculate, regular sweeping is recommended, ideally on a weekly basis. For a more intensive clean, clear the area of any furniture or obstructions, then give it a good sweep before scrubbing with a soft-bristled brush and a specialist stone cleaning solution.

Egyptian limestone is a porous stone, aiding with its ability to self-insulate. However, it is also less porous than other stone types, such as certain sandstones, which helps to give it greater stain resistance.

To reduce porosity further, apply a stone sealer to your Egyptian limestone patio.

Applying a polymer slurry primer (such as Pro Primer Slurry) to the back of every slab is essential when laying Egyptian limestone.

Because limestone is natural and porous, the slurry primer creates a strong bond with the wet mortar bed and acts as a barrier. This prevents moisture, alkalis, and minerals from drawing up through the mortar and causing permanent “picture framing” or staining on the face of the stone.

Egyptian limestone is denser than many other limestone varieties, making it suitable for driveways when used with the correct format and installation method.

For patios & paths: Standard 20mm or 22mm calibrated slabs on a full mortar bed are ideal for pedestrian foot traffic.

For driveways: Use thicker formats, such as Egyptian limestone drivestone cobble setts, installed over a reinforced concrete sub-base with a heavy-duty jointing compound (like Nexus Titan).

For Egyptian limestone tiles, use a high-quality, non-staining polymeric brush-in compound (like Nexus Fusion) or a specialised exterior stone grout.

Ensure the jointing material is suitable for natural stone and that any excess is swept away immediately during installation to prevent grout haze from drying on the textured or tumbled surface.

These two surface treatments alter the character and texture of Egyptian limestone:

• Acid-washed: Professionally treated with a mild acidic solution before sale to open up the stone’s texture, accentuating its intricate fossil patterns and natural veining. (Note: Acid washing is done in factory conditions and should never be attempted at home.)
• Tumbled: Slabs are tumbled in a rotating drum to gently weather the surface and soften the edges, giving the stone a rustic, hand-crafted aesthetic perfect for country cottage or Mediterranean-style gardens.

Natural sunlight will gently mellow Egyptian limestone over time. These cream tones stay very consistent, while darker or warm golden shades soften naturally under UV exposure.

To preserve the original deep tone and fossil highlights, you can apply a colour-enhancing impregnating sealer (like PRO-410). If you prefer a completely natural matte look without darkening the stone, choose an invisible sealer (like PRO-810).
