Patio Circles

Incorporate a patio circle into your paving with our steps:

1. Dry lay your patio circle with a 10-15mm jointing gap between slabs to check size and layout.
2. Once satisfied with the dry layout, mark where you want the centre of your circle to be, then mark the desired outline of the circle, allowing a working space of around 150mm. 
3. Dig away the topsoil in your marked area, ensuring the final surface is at least 150mm below any damp proof course. Include a slope away from your home/fencing – around a 1-80 fall or difference of 25mm over 2m.
4. Lay MOT Type 1 sub base and compact to around 75mm. 
5. Top with mortar mix, spread generously over an area slightly bigger than the intended stone circle paving.
6. Begin laying your stone circle paving as rehearsed in the dry run, with 10mm joints between pavers, working from the centre outward. Tap each paver into place with a rubber mallet and ensure they are flush with one another using a spirit level.
7. Now you can begin ‘squaring off’ with your squaring off kit – these are straight-edged pavers with semicircles cut into them so that they fit around your patio circle. 
8. If your stone circle paving is going to be part of a larger patio, you can now lay the surrounding traditionally square patio pavers as you would normally. Our guide to laying paving can help with this. 
9. Allow to set for 24 hours.
10. Fill the joints with mortar, using a pointing tool for a neat and even spread.

One popular choice for stone circle paving is to incorporate it into your rectangular paving on your patio and driveway to create a more visually stunning paving layout.

Another fantastic landscaping choice is using stone circles to break up gravel areas. A striking stone circle adds even more intrigue to aggregate paving, offering contrast and a perfect spot to perch plant pots in your otherwise gravel garden.

Stone circles can also be a great way to create a cosy corner in your outdoor space where you can place a garden chair for outdoor reading.

Smaller stone circles can also be used as eye-catching stepping stones through a lawn space. Their complex multi-slab pattern is perfect for those wanting something a little more intricate and statement-making than typical single slab stepping stones. 

Finally, stone circles are also wonderful for accentuating key garden features like sundials and water fountains. 

A go-to placement for a patio circle is in the exact centre of the paving, giving a stunning focal point. However, you could also create a patio with multiple circles. For example, a circle in the centre combined with circles in each corner can create an incredibly striking look. You could even explore multiple interlocking and overlapping circles of varying sizes for a real statement.
