Our Experts

‘Having matching accessories with a natural stone paving patio elevates what can often be a bland area, to a sleek, stylish, and desirable outdoor space to enjoy. The use of cobbles to border a patio adds another dimension to the area, but the use of matching natural stone coping stones and steps, literally takes the area to another level!’ – Andy McLaughlin, Sales and Operations Director.

Stone Steps and Copings FAQs
How to lay coping stones for walls

Coping a wall can give it greater longevity, preventing rain from seeping into the wall. Follow our steps to wall coping:

  • Clean your wall, brushing debris and moisture away.
  • Lay out your coping stones on the wall in a dry run to ensure everything fits. Our stone-cutting guide can help you if resizing is needed.
  • Apply mortar between 1-2cm thickness
  • Tap your stone copings with a rubber mallet so that they are level.
  • Fill the joints with grout to keep the stones in place.

Our coping laying guide covers this in more detail.

How to lay stone steps

Garden steps must be built with immense care for both aesthetics and safety.

  • Assess your slope to understand the number of steps needed. Steps are generally 6 to 8 inches high.
  • Mark out where each step will be with pegs.
  • Remove debris and obstacles like plants and rocks from the area.
  • Dig your soil to the depths needed, using your pegs as a guide.
  • Give each excavated area a base of gravel or crushed rock, then compact this layer with a plate compactor.
  • Place a layer of landscape fabric over the base.
  • Mix adhesive and spread on the base of your first stone.
  • Lay your first stone.
  • Repeat the above two steps until all stones have been laid.
  • Fill gaps behind and between steps with gravel and lightly compact to ensure stability.

Our guide to building garden steps offers further advice.

How to lay garden stepping stones

If you are using stepping stones to create a pretty path, follow our easy instructions.

  • Perform a dry run, laying your steps out to get an idea of how they will look when installed. Ensure that they are roughly an equal distance apart.
  • Use a turf edger to cut around the outline of each stone.
  • Remove the stone, then cut away all of the turf that sits within the outline.
  • Dig a hole in each stone outline 2cm deeper than the depth of your stepping stone.
  • Add 2cm of mortar to the bottom of your first hole.
  • Slot the stone into the hole.
  • Make sure the stone is level by tapping into place with a rubber mallet.
  • Repeat the above three steps until all stepping stones are laid.
  • Fill any gaps with loose soil.

Our stepping stone laying guide offers more information if needed.
