Laying Systems

Laying paving can be tricky, particularly when it comes to creating an even surface without lippage – a difference in elevation between two adjacent tiles.

Luckily, our laying systems make the process much simpler. With both pedestals and levelling systems to choose from, you can lay your patio, pathway or drive in the way that’s easiest for you.

With our pedestals, you can opt for a range of heights and lock your tiles into place with a simple twist. Alternatively, use our screw-based levelling systems for a high degree of control with quick and easy adjustments that works not only on floors but on walls and ceilings too.

With these systems, paving becomes so much easier. Whether you’re trying to create an even parking surface when laying driveway slabs or simply want a pretty patio, use our laying systems to pave perfectly.

Can You Lay Paving Slabs On Sand?

One base option for your paving is sand, following our steps below:

  • The area should be level and well-drained
  • Dig the sand until it is 150mm below the damp-proof course
  • Compact the sand with a plate compactor
  • Add wooden frame edging to keep sand in position
  • Add two 50mm sub bases
  • Top with 30mm of compacted sharp sand
  • Lay your slabs
  • Fill joints with dry, fine sand
Can You Lay Paving Slabs On Soil?

Laying paving on soil is complex and shouldn’t be used for high traffic areas like driveways.

If paving is to be laid on soil, it should be a heavy clay type to withstand British weather. Drainage will be needed to minimise the risk of sinking and shifting. It is also advisable to add a layer of sand to the soil for a level finish.
