Sandstone Paving FAQs
How to Lay Sandstone Paving

Follow our simple steps below:

  1. Accurately measure the area to determine the size and quantity of pavers required.
  2. Use wooden stakes to mark the area.
  3. Arrange the pavers on the ground without mortar to preview the layout. Take a photo for reference.
  4. Excavate the area, ensuring the depth accommodates the crushed stone sub-base, mortar base, and the pavers.
  5. Lay a 2-inch layer of crushed stone for the sub-base.
  6. Compact the sub-base using a plate compactor.
  7. Spread a 2-inch layer of mortar over the sub-base, only applying mortar to sections you are actively working on to avoid it drying out prematurely.
  8. Place the paving slabs on the mortar.
  9. Allow the installation to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
  10. Brush patio grout into the joints to fill gaps and secure the pavers.
  11. Remove any excess joint solution.

How to Grout a Sandstone Patio

To grout your sandstone patio, driveway, or paved area, first clear the joint of loose mortar, algae, weeds, or moss. Brush away any debris. Then, mix your paving grout.

You can then fill the joint with grout until it is level with the lower of the two pavers it is between. Press into place with a trowel and slide a jointing tool over the top to create an inverted arch for a rain channel.

Leave to dry for a few hours then return to clear away excess grout. For more tips, see our grouting guide.

How to Clean Sandstone Paving

To clean sandstone paving, remove any objects in the way. Then, brush away any leaves, dust, and dirt. You can then scrub the paved area with a mixture of natural stone cleaner and water. Our Ultimate Guide to Cleaning Your Paving and Patios has more cleaning tips and advice.

Can You Pressure Wash Sandstone Paving?

Sandstone paving can be cleaned through pressure washing. However, to avoid damaging the stones, this should be done at a distance of about twelve to eighteen inches away on a light setting.
