What are the Benefits of Limestone Paving?

Limestone boasts many advantages as a paving material. Its hard-wearing nature allows it to easily handle foot traffic, and it’s slip-resistant for added safety.

Limestone is beautiful on an aesthetic level, too, particularly our striking Kota Black shade, which is sourced directly from India.

Limestone is also naturally insulating, so it won’t be too hot against your bare feet in the summer and is frost-resistant in winter.

Furthermore, limestone as a material is easy to cut, allowing a variety of shapes and sizes of natural limestone pavers to be made to suit unique gardens and outdoor spaces. For this reason, we use limestone in our stunning stone circle kits

Limestone Paving FAQs
How to lay limestone paving

Laying paving is best done by a trained professional.

The steps to lay limestone paving are as follows:

  1. Measure the area exactly to understand the size and shape of pavers you need.
  2. Mark your area with wooden pegs.
  3. Lay your paving out on the dry ground first to make sure you’re happy with how it will look. You can take a picture to help you remember how this looks.
  4. Dig into your ground. You want the hole to be deep enough for your sub-base of crushed stone, your mortar base and, of course, the stones themselves.
  5. Add a two-inch crushed stone sub-base.
  6. Compact your sub-base with a plate compactor.
  7. Add two inches of mortar over the top, only adding mortar to the area you are about to pave to prevent premature drying.
  8. Add your paving slabs.
  9. Leave to dry for 24 to 48 hours.
  10. Brush the patio joint to secure the gaps.
  11. Wipe away any excess.

See our laying guide for more in-depth instructions.

Do limestone slabs need sealing?

Apply a sealant over the stones to preserve the gorgeous colour of your limestone paving for years to come. Our natural stone sealants come in colour-enhancing and invisible options and can help make your paved area much easier to maintain.

The rich black tones of Kota Black limestone paving can be further deepened and protected through the use of a colour enhancer sealant. This special sealant not only intensifies the stone’s colour but also acts as a protective layer that prevents stains and preserves the paver’s colour, ensuring your paving maintains its stunning appearance for years to come.
