Striking and elegant limestone paving adds so much aesthetic appeal to your outdoor space, whether in the form of sleek patio pavers or smart and stylish cobbles. Available in beautiful shades and stunning natural patterning, it’s a classic landscaping choice.

What is Limestone Paving?

‘Limestone is a harder, denser, and less porous alternative to sandstone. These characteristics and qualities give it some benefits over its natural counterparts. Still, it is also available in different colours… from Kota Black, a stock item to lighter beiges, which are available through our Bespoke Sourcing Service, meaning there will be a limestone paving slab to complement any exterior or interior space.’

Andy McLaughlin, Sales and Operations Director.

How to Lay Limestone Paving?

Create a magnificent limestone patio or courtyard with our steps to laying limestone outdoor pavers.

To start, you’ll need the following:

If any of your limestone outdoor pavers require resizing, you may also need stone cutting blades. Now, let’s move on to the steps for installing your pavers.

  1. First, measure the area to ensure you have the correct size and number of limestone patio slabs needed.
  2. Mark out the area to be paved using wooden pegs or spray paint.
  3. Next, we recommend a dry run. Lay the paving out without mortar to check everything looks correct. This is particularly helpful if you are using limestone outdoor pavers of different sizes and shapes.
  4. Dig the topsoil from the area to a depth of four inches plus the thickness of your limestone patio slabs.
  5. Add two inches of a crushed stone sub-base, compacting with a plate compactor.
  6. Apply enough mortar for your first limestone paver, two inches thick.
  7. Lay your first slab, tapping it into place with a rubber mallet and using a spirit level to ensure it is in line.
  8. Repeat steps six and seven until all of your limestone patio slabs are laid.
  9. Leave your limestone patio to dry for 1-2 days.
  10. Brush patio grout into the gaps between your limestone slabs to secure them, cleaning away any excess. Then, leave it to set for another day.

Do Limestone Slabs Need Sealing?

Applying a sealer to limestone keeps the colour striking and dramatic for years to come. This is particularly true for Kota Black limestone as a sealer can help to prevent the iconic black colour from fading into grey over time.

Our colour enhancing sealers are particularly useful if preserving the colour of your limestone is a priority. Plus, our guide on how to seal paving can help you with proper application.

How to Clean a Limestone Patio

A limestone patio is easy to maintain, needing only occasional cleaning. To get your limestone outdoor pavers looking spick and span, simply remove obstacles, then sweep debris such as leaves from the paved area.

Now, inspect for moss, algae and lichen. Algae and lichen can be tackled with a bleach and water treatment, while moss should be scraped with a trowel or other tool.

Our patio cleaner can be used alongside a firm-bristled brush for any other stains or dirt. You may also encounter weeds in the gaps between pavers, which our guide to tackling weeds can help with.
