Porcelain Coping FAQs
How to lay porcelain wall copings

Porcelain wall copings should be laid for optimal elegance and protection following our steps:

  • Brush the top of the wall so it is clear of debris that would otherwise make the laying of your stones unstable. Some deeper cleaning may be required, such as scraping off moss and scrubbing with warm water and mild detergent.
  • Lay your porcelain coping stones along the wall dry. This allows you to see how well your stones fit along the wall. We offer porcelain cutting blades if resizing is required.
  • Spread mortar over the top of the wall, covering an area about 25% larger than your porcelain coping tiles at a thickness of 1-2cm.
  • Lay the porcelain coping tiles, using a spirit level to ensure they are in line with one another.
  • Point the joints with mortar.
  • Apply a residue remover to any marks on the porcelain wall copings.

What are the different types of porcelain coping stones?

Porcelain coping tiles are made in a variety of styles. Downstand copings extend downward over the edge of the wall, while a chamfered coping stone has a bevelled edge and a pencil round coping tile has an edge rounded to a small radius like the end of a pencil.

At RF Paving, we favour bullnose porcelain coping stones. Bull-nosed edges refer to a specific design feature where the edges of the coping stones are rounded off. This not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of the stones but also eliminates sharp corners, making your outdoor space safer for everyone.

How to clean porcelain coping stones

Our porcelain cleaners make maintaining your porcelain coping tiles simple. Simply combine with warm water and scrub the stones with this solution and a firm-bristled brush. For more advice, see our paving cleaning guide.

How can I weatherproof porcelain copings?

While porcelain is inherently weather-resistant, sealing the grout can prevent moisture intrusion. Regular cleaning and maintenance also ensure the surface remains slip-resistant and free from moss or algae.

Are porcelain copings slip-resistant?

Many porcelain steps and copings are designed with slip-resistant textures to improve traction. We recommend always checking product specifications to confirm slip resistance, especially for installations in wet areas, such as by an outdoor pool or water feature.
