What are the Benefits of Limestone Cobbles?

Limestone is an excellent material for cobble setts, thanks to its strength, durability and slip resistance. Limestone is also incredibly low maintenance and weather resistant, so upkeep of your cobbled driveway, pathway or courtyard is simple.

We particularly love black limestone setts, which create a striking and elegant cobbled area.

Kota Black Limestone Cobbles

Kota Black limestone cobbles are a type of paving stone that originates from India. They are unique because of their consistent dark grey to-black colour, which provides a striking contrast against natural hues. Additionally, unlike many other types of limestone, these cobbles have a less rugged texture, giving them a sleek and modern look.

Our Case Studies

Our Experts

‘Limestone is a harder, denser, and less porous alternative to sandstone. These characteristics and qualities, give it some benefits over its natural counterparts, but it is also available in different colours… from Kota Black which is a stock item to lighter beiges which are available through our Bespoke Sourcing Service, meaning there will be a limestone paving slab to compliment any exterior or interior space.’ – Andy McLaughlin, Sales and Operations Director.

Frequently Asked Questions
How to lay limestone cobbles

To lay your limestone cobbles to create a courtyard, path or driveway, follow our steps:

  • Mark out your area using pegs, spray paint, or another preferred method
  • Dig 200-250mm removing vegetation, topsoil and weeds
  • Smooth out the ground, levelling with a rake and compacting with a plate compactor
  • Lay 75mm of MOT 1 type sub base
  • Compress before adding a 75mm second layer
  • Prepare and apply mortar, adding enough for one cobble at a time so no mortar dries before a sett can be laid on it
  • Lay your limestone cobble setts 8-15mm apart
  • Leave to set for one full day

For more guidance, see our guide to laying cobbles.

Is limestone good for driveways?

Limestone is incredibly strong and durable, having been naturally fused together over millions of years. Combined with the thickness of cobble setts, this makes limestone cobbles perfect for a driveway to handle the weight of vehicle’s and more.

How to clean a cobbled area

Clean your limestone cobbles with our natural stone cleaner mixed with water. A stiff-bristled brush will allow you to scrub each cobble clean and get in between the cobbles, too.

A limestone cobbled driveway may also benefit from being rinsed with a power washer, although this should be done at a low setting. See our paving maintenance guide for more advice on cleaning and care.

Combine the traditional rustic style of cobbles with the sleek and modern appearance of black limestone with RF Paving limestone cobble setts.
