Can you put pots on a porcelain patio?

You can place whatever you desire on porcelain paving as it is highly durable and won’t be damaged.

How should you edge a porcelain patio?

This is entirely a personal choice. There are many options, from sleepers to gravel to traditional sandstone edging. It’s completely up to you, and no choice is wrong.

Do porcelain paving slabs need to be sealed?

No, porcelain paving does not need to be sealed. Porcelain has a 0.5% absorption rate, so no sealer would penetrate its surface. The purpose of sealing is to prevent stains from being absorbed, which is unnecessary for porcelain paving.

Do porcelain pavers get hot in the sun?

Yes, they can become warm throughout the day if the sun is shining directly onto them. The degree of warmth depends on the colour chosen, with darker colours becoming hotter than lighter colours.

Are porcelain slabs/pavers/paving frost-proof?

Yes! So you needn’t worry about your patio during the colder winter months.

How resistant are porcelain pavers to chipping and cracking?

Porcelain pavers are very durable, but vitrified porcelain paving is even stronger and longer lasting. All our porcelain paving products are vitrified, so they have high resistance to chipping, though they are not 100% resistant.

Can porcelain pavers be used for a driveway?

Yes, porcelain pavers can be used for driveways, as long as the pavers have a full bed of mortar, are laid correctly, and have suitable grout.

What is the estimated cost per square metre for laying a porcelain patio, including materials and installation?

There is no definitive answer as each contractor charges different rates, depending on the size of the area in question. However, to give you a rough guide, you can expect to pay between £130 and £180 per square metre, including labour and materials.

Are porcelain slabs slippery?

Some porcelain slabs can be, but every porcelain paving slab we sell at RF Paving has an R11 anti-slip rating.

Does porcelain paving fade?

Our porcelain paving does not fade and can thrive in both warm or cold climates.

How does porcelain generally compare to natural stone, specifically sandstone and Indian sandstone?

There are pros and cons to each type of stone depending on your preferences and priorities for your personal lifestyle. Porcelain is much more durable and easy to maintain than natural stone. However, natural paving offers a unique aesthetic appeal that porcelain cannot mimic — so the choice is yours!

Is porcelain paving more expensive to lay?

Not necessarily, unless any intricate cutting and shaping is required. Porcelain paving is harder to cut and requires specialist blades, which can increase the cost of a patio installation.

Is porcelain paving expensive?

Porcelain paving has become more affordable in recent years, though there are still expensive options available.

What is porcelain paving, how is it manufactured, and what distinguishes vitrified porcelain paving?

Porcelain paving is a ceramic that is heated at a very high temperature in a kiln, resulting in a superior product that is more durable and easier to colour throughout the tile.

Vitrified porcelain paving is made from an extremely pure mineral and clay composition, including kaolin clay, quartz, and feldspar. The slabs are then fired at 1200 degrees Celsius, making it  much more durable than ordinary porcelain. It has an extremely low absorption rate of 0.5% compared to a normal ceramic tile absorption rate of 3%-10%.

All our porcelain paving products are vitrified, though we use “porcelain paving” to make the terminology easier to understand.

Can you do bespoke options in the different ranges?

No, only products that are permeable need to be sealed.

Is porcelain frost-resistant?

Yes, our porcelain paving is frost-resistant, algae-resistant, and stain-resistant. Plus, thanks to its high durability it’s easy to maintain too.

Will porcelain fade in the sunlight?

Unlike limestone paving and many other natural products, porcelain never fades, no matter the conditions. This makes it a great option for both hot and cold climates alike.

Is porcelain easy to clean?

Porcelain is the best option for any outdoor area if you require a low-maintenance, easy-to-clean product. All our porcelain paving is stain-resistant, and any natural wear and tear marks will easily come off with a jet wash or any form of high-pressured water.

Is porcelain slippery?

In a nutshell, nope, not ours! Our porcelain paving slabs all have an R11 slip rating, which greatly reduces the chance of slippage making it safe and slip-free for your peace of mind.
