In and Out Tiles FAQs
Can you use indoor tiles outside?

You can use a 10mm tile outside if it has a minimum R11 slip rating on the surface. This is only suitable for certain applications, and we advise that it can be suitable in circumstances such as a full concrete bed with a flexible adhesive. However, always check with the tile manufacturer and your installer first.

In and Out tiles provide a more reliable alternative by creating two sets of tiles, internal and external, with the same colouring and pattern to give the impression of having the exact same tiles inside and outside.

How to choose matching in and out tiles

Choosing inside and outside tiles means considering your interior and exterior aesthetic at the same time. Do you want a modern aesthetic with large-format, bright white tiles? Or a Mediterranean look with warmer, beige tones?

Marble effect porcelain tiles create a sense of grandeur and luxury, while wood effect offers rustic comfort. Our guide to coordinating interior and exterior tiles can inspire you further.

How to lay inside and outside floor tiles

When laying In and Out tiles, we advise starting with the interior and laying the tiles like so:

  1. Install an anti-crack mat / decoupling membrane on the floor using a flexible adhesive.
  2. Mark the centre point of the floor—that’s where you’ll lay your first tile.
  3. Apply adhesive just for the first tile and score it with a trowel. Press the first tile into place.
  4. Use spacers between tiles, positioning each new tile snugly against a spacer.
  5. Once finished, let the entire tiled area cure for at least 24 hours.
  6. Apply grout diagonally into the joints with a rubber float.
  7. Carefully wipe away any excess grout (haze) using a damp sponge.
  8. Let the floor completely cure for 1 week before heavy use.

For your exterior tiles, we advise:

  1. Prepare a full bed of 4 parts sharp sand to 1 part cement, about 50mm thick.
  2. Completely cover the back of the slab with a slurry primer for adhesion, or lay slabs on a solid concrete bed using flexible, waterproof tile adhesive
  3. Tap the slabs into place and level using a rubber hammer.
  4. For cutting, use a table saw with a porcelain blade to prevent chips.
  5. Fill joints with a suitable brush-in or Flowpoint grout.
How to care for inside and outside floor tiles

Our inside and outside floor tiles are very low-maintenance due to being made of porcelain. They require minimal upkeep, aside from occasional sweeping of debris and cleaning. Outdoor tiles can be cleaned with our porcelain cleaner, while indoor tiles can be mopped with warm water mixed with mild soap.
